Many children are exposed to music in some fashion, but rarely do they get to experience a full, nationally known, professional chamber choir — sopranos, altos, tenors, and all.

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale will be providing Santa Fe’s little ones with an interactive choral music experience on Tuesday, July 30, during the Insights and Sounds family mini-concert.

The event will feature all 24 Desert Chorale singers in a pay what-you-wish performance led by Artistic Director Joshua Habermann, who is in his 16th season with the group.

According to Joanna Armstrong, Desert Chorale’s marketing and communications manager, the performance will include songs selected specifically to appeal to children and families from Desert Chorale’s three summer programs: Songs of the Americas, Out of this World, and The Great Romantics (see story at left).

The music portion of the event, 30 minutes long, will include interactive activities and opportunities for children and family participation, including a song in which household objects will be used to make music. Following the performance, the audience can mingle with the singers during an informal meet and greet in the Christ Church Santa Fe lobby.

“Our goal with this concert and this program is to introduce kids to choral music, to choirs … [and] the different kinds of singers,” Armstrong says. “We’re hoping to get them excited about that.”

This is Desert Chorale’s third family concert; the first took place in summer 2023 and the second over the holidays last December.

“Our singers come from all over the country, but we love our Santa Fe community, and we want to contribute,” Armstrong says. “This is a way that we feel like we can contribute, especially to young music lovers, to get them excited about music and to show them that a career like this is possible.”
