Hearts in Harmony is a year-round program at The Life Link, a social service agency focused on homelessness, mental health, and addiction. The chorale’s Cultivation and Engagement Manager Heather Eaves and pianist Michelle Schumann lead a weekly one-hour community sing in which clients, staff, and volunteers can participate.
“We do all kinds of music, ‘Los Colores’ and ‘Country Roads,’” the youthful Eaves says. “Yesterday we sang ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and one guy joined in on the part near the end where it goes up an octave and sang it all by himself. It’s all music the clientele would have heard growing up, so I’ve had to learn lots of music that’s new to me.”
Santa Fe Sings! is an annual one-day workshop in which vocalists of all ages and skill ranges are led by Artistic Director Joshua Habermann in a program that encourages joyful and confident singing. This year’s workshop takes place on April 26 at the United Church of Santa Fe, and Eaves says that registration so far is setting a chorale record. For students it’s a pay-what-you-can event, for adults it’s $25. For more information, visit sfnm.co/dcsings.
The chorale’s 24 professional vocalists will take part in a Family Concert during the summer, with date and venue to be announced. This free event will feature music from the chorale’s three programs — Roots and Rivers, Mass for the Endangered, and Cantos y Cuentos — along with interactive educational components and a post-performance meet-and-greet.
An unusually large number of living composers are represented at the group’s summer concerts and many of them will be in Santa Fe for an Insights and Sounds Symposium. The two-day event, July 24-25, is given in collaboration with the Boulanger Initiative and includes a composition workshop for local high school and college students.
